My Painting Was Almost Destroyed
Repairing the canvas was a beautiful reminder of life and marriage
A lovely bride reached out to me to capture her wedding day. She told me she had been a keen follower of my Instagram even before getting engaged and was thrilled that I was available to paint on her wedding day. I was equally excited to be a part of it and to help her create memories that would last a lifetime.

The couple got married on a piece of land in east Tennessee with plans to construct their dream house from the ground up.
With no buildings on the property, there was no access to power or water on site, but the neighbors were kind enough to offer up their utilities for this couple to use. The wedding ended up being split between the two properties.
The wedding ceremony was a beautiful sight to behold with its simplistic yet elegant setup. The forest provided a stunning backdrop that glimmered in the sunlight, while the sparkling water added a touch of magic to the setting.
The couple asked for their painting to be set against the water with the two of them strolling along hand in hand. There was a very special detail about the trees in the background that they wanted me to highlight in the painting: a heart with the couple's names inside was engraved into the trunk of a certain tree.

The setting was stunning, the ceremony was beautiful, and the painting was coming along well. That is, up until the weather turned. Huge gusts of wind started blowing into the reception, the wind was threatening to lift the canopies, including the one where I was busy creating their custom portrait. Some people tried their best to hold canopies down, but it soon became clear that the storm would not let up.
Amid all that wind, my canvas blew off the easel and fell to the ground. When I recovered the canvas I found a tear from the fall!
Everyone moved under cover to wait out the storm. The lightning, rain, and wind created quite the spectacle as we all stood watching and waiting.
Eventually, the reception was able to continue, and when I was able to talk to the bride and groom about the painting, they were wonderfully positive about the whole thing. When I told them I could repair their canvas, they simply took it as another memento of their wedding. I found this to be a nice reflection of marriage: things may not always work out as you’d like them to, but taking the good with the bad is what holds the marriage together for its own unique story.
After the wedding, when I brought the painting back to my studio, I applied a patch to the back of the canvas. After touching up the painting, the tear in the canvas was almost invisible from the front. Despite the storm, wind, and accidents that happened, the painting turned out to be perfect and with a little extra character!
