Painting a Vibrant Disco Party
Did you know that live event painting is not limited to weddings?
This painting is the perfect example. A couple contacted me to get a painting done for their 17th wedding anniversary. They were planning an elaborate anniversary party at their home in Johnson City Tennessee, and we're eager to have a memory of the day.
The clients had a clear vision for the painting they commissioned - they wanted it to exude the vibrant energy of their disco theme party. The event was named Studio 17, inspired by the legendary Manhattan disco club, Studio 54. As I began setting up my easel, I couldn't help but notice how the entire ambiance screamed disco, with colorful lights, glittering decorations, and upbeat music filling the air.
The couple spared no expense on this anniversary party. There were fountains and disco balls, a live band playing classic disco music, and an eye-catching champagne tower. They had even hired professional dancers to help create the disco atmosphere.
My career in live event painting has taken me to plenty of extravagant events, but this disco theme party had to be high on the list of glamorous and flashy parties. The couple had just finished remodeling their house, so this anniversary gave them the perfect opportunity to host their friends at their newly remodeled home.
Capturing all of this action in one painting had its challenges. Part of the process of live event painting involves taking photos of the event, and of the couple, so that I have something to reference later while painting.
Because there was so much happening at this anniversary party, I was taking more photos than usual, meaning this part of my job took longer than it normally does. I needed pictures of the band, the dancers, the couple, and their family. I also needed pictures of the guests dining on the balcony, to truly bring this scene together.
This painting was unique in that it depicted more people than any other painting I’ve done, with somewhere around 30 people captured in the painting. The anniversary couple is front and center in the painting, with their twin boys dancing nearby. My client’s mother was also clearly shown in the foreground of the painting, wearing a stunning green dress.
The evening was truly alive, brimming with energy. The couple had requested a painting that captured this sense of vitality, and they were not disappointed. The painting was infused with a kaleidoscope of colors, a touch of glamor, and a sense of movement that was so vivid that you could almost hear the rhythm of the music within the brushstrokes.
